The communication field is behind the curve on the evaluation of standards for electronic publishing. Several other associations, such as the Modern Language Association, College Composition and Communication Conference, and the American Psychological Association, have already formulated policies related to such publishing. What those policies are, and whether the communication field should feel constrained to adopt similar policies, will be reviewed in due course. What we will do, in the ensuing discussion, is provide a context for evaluating e-publishing, review some of the differences that must be considered, and propose some responses that are intended to move the conversation forward.
